The best jobs for college students might surprise you. Though it is tempting to simply go down to the local fast food restaurant and get a job to make ends meet, it might not be the best bet. When you consider which jobs for college students might be right for you, consider your resume!

Jobs for college students abound. College towns thrive on the fresh new workers that give back to the economy and energize the area with their ambitions. But when you are looking at all the tempting job offers to supplement your income, don’t jump at the first thing that looks good. Consider what will look good to your future employers.

Are you seeking a degree in management? Working in a hotel or running a small shop might be the best bet for you, as it will show your future employers that you were building your management skills long before you had the degree in hand. Are you going into the medical field? Working in a pharmacy or even being a receptionist in a medical office will look wonderful on that work experience section. If you have an eye toward the film or music industry, look for work at your local movie house or record shop.

When you do choose a job, remember that your work history counts with your future employers. Always be certain to show up on time, do your job to the best of your ability, and be courteous to everyone you meet. If you can come up with ways to make your job more efficient and save the business owner some money, do it! It will look very good on you when future employers call with questions about your performance.

The best jobs for college students might not be paying jobs. If you can get by without the extra money from a part-time job, considering becoming an intern. Interns work under mentors in the business they hope to pursue after college, and in doing so, gain valuable experience. You might not get a paycheck for your work, but being an intern opens a very big door to full-time work with your company of choice.

At the very least, being an intern lets you know if the work is right for you. After a summer of working in the industry you think you want to pursue, you might decide on a different career path. It’s better to learn your strengths and desires now, rather than when you have the degree in hand and wind up miserable in your chosen profession.

Whatever jobs for college students interest you, make sure to choose the one that is right not only for your present situation, but for your future endeavors as well.

With the average college graduate leaving university with approximately $20,000 in debt, there is no doubt that the best way to repay student loans is through a college loan consolidation. By consolidating college loans, graduates will be able to reduce their monthly payments, gain flexibility in repayment options, reduce their numerous monthly repayments into one manageable monthly payment, in some cases reset the clock on deferments and forbearance’s and gain favorable interest rate discounts and rebates. However, before you decide to consolidate your college loans, you need to be aware of certain limitations and potential drawbacks. These don’t necessarily mean you need to rethink consolidation all together but rather guide you through aspects you need to consider before finally taking the plunge and consolidating all your college loans into one.

The first thing to keep in mind is that you can only consolidate your college loans once. Once you have done so, you will not be able to re-consolidate your loan with another lender. The exception to this rule is when you have left some loans out from the total consolidated amount and now wish to add on more loans. In this case, it will be considered as a new consolidation and you could potentially switch to a more favorable lender.

Another point to consider is the level of discounts you could receive when consolidating college loans. The discounts in interest rates given if you set up monthly bank transfers or you always pay on time are small compared to other financial services. The lenders blame squeezed margins on their college loan consolidation products due to regulations. As such you can expect to receive a maximum of 0.25% in interest rate reductions if you set up a monthly bank transfer and around 1% in interest rate reductions if you don’t miss a payment within the first 36 months of the term.

If you are married and you are now both ready to consolidate your loans, you will not be able to consolidate your partner’s and your loans into one. Since July 1 2006, married graduates will not be able to consolidate their loans together due to potential difficulties if the couple decides to split.

When you have decided to consolidate your college loans, keep in mind that by consolidating you will loose all your interest benefits obtained with Perkins Loan. The good news is that if you have Stafford loans, you keep all the subsidized benefits.

As most college graduates know, getting a well-paying job requires more than just a bachelor’s degree. Many people find that master’s and even a doctor’s degree is required to make it in the competitive job market, particularly in some highly competitive careers. However, those who have just paid for four or more years of undergraduate work rarely have the money to put forward to pay for even more schooling. This dooms them to working jobs they don’t want as they try to earn the money necessary to finish their education. However, there is another option. There are grants and loans available for graduate school, just as there are for undergrad work.

Keep in mind that many of the graduate school grants are specific to a certain degree. Before you start applying, find out what grants are available for your degree field. Specialized fields like engineering and science have several grants available. Some of these are specific for people who are minorities, while others are available for all individuals pursuing a particular degree field.

Not only that, but the federal government has some graduate school grant programs that are designed to promote future community service. For instance, a teacher who is pursuing a graduate degree in education can apply for a federal grant to help him pursue a master’s degree in return for the promise that after graduation he will work in a needy area. The same is true for medical degrees.

Students who are looking to pursue a line of research can often find a grant in that field. Professional organizations that are interested in working with this type of research often offer grants. Research fields include medical, scientific, social, and even cultural areas. The government has some of these as well. For instance, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has offered a grant to a student who is performing research in urban development.

To apply for these graduate school grants, start by filling out the FAFSA. Then, apply to several schools where you will be an asset to their program, either because of your grades or other qualifications. This can create a situation where the schools want to vie for your application and are willing to help you get grants. Finally, if you are currently employed in your industry or degree field, consider seeing if your employer will help you pay for your education in order to bring a benefit to the company
