Planning a Mexico Vacation? Keep These Travel Tips in Mind

by admin on February 17, 2009

Mexico is an ideal location for an international vacation, as it is one of America’s closest neighbors. You can step into another culture without traveling far from home when you visit Mexico. If a Mexican vacation is in your future, be sure to keep these things in mind.

First, you need to make sure that you follow the country’s entry requirements. Before you leave home you will need to have your photo I.D. and a valid proof of citizenship, such as your birth certificate or a passport. You will also need a Tourist Card to enter the country. This, however, you can obtain at your entry point or at the airport.

Once you receive your Tourist Card, do not lose or damage the bottom portion, which is the part you receive back. The Mexican Immigration officials will need this when you leave the country. Write down the number so that you have it if you do lose the card.

There are some special rules for minors, which are those under the age of 18, who are traveling to Mexico. If they are traveling without their parents, they will need to have the normal documents along with a notarized letter of permission signed by both of their parents. If they are traveling with just one parent, they must have the notarized letter of permission signed by the other parent. If the other parent is no longer a part of the family, legal proof of death or divorce must be present in order for the child to enter the country.

One of the first things you may want to do when you arrive is have your money changed. However, if your travels are limited to border towns, you may be able to pay in dollars for your purchases. If you can, do not change your money, as you will pay a fee to do so.

Once you arrive, you will need a way to get around. You may wish to drive into the country. If you do, make sure you have cash to use at the gas stations. Remember, you will have a service attendant, and they expect to be tipped. The price of gas in Mexico tends to mirror the price in the states. You can also travel by bus if you are staying in one particular city. If you do, choose a First Class bus so that you will be as comfortable as possible. You can travel by train if you will be moving from city to city, but this can get a little pricey.
