Being someone’s Matron of Honor is a huge compliment! Being asked to fulfill this very important role is an honor, indeed – you’re trusted to be the bride’s right-hand-woman during one of the most important times in her life. She wants you by her side to make those big decisions. What friend wouldn’t want to be asked to perform such a beautiful function?
The word “matron” in the title is not by coincidence. A wedding takes all kinds of careful planning and attention to last-minute details. That’s where you come in! You’re going to be the helper to your friend, the point-person all others will turn to when the bride is too busy to handle another detail.
That’s why it’s so important to keep your composure at all times! The bride can fall apart – it’s almost expected of her. You, being the matron of honor, have to be the cool head that prevails. You can start doing this early, as soon as the engagement party or the bridal shower is planned.
Introduce yourself to everyone and make it clear you can be contacted with all those important questions. Take the pressure off your friend by handing out cards with your name, phone number, and email address printed on them, and invite the guests to come to you with the little questions – after all, your friend doesn’t need to deal with the question of whether or not the happy couple already has a blender.
As the wedding approaches, one of the matron of honors duties is to help with the bridesmaid’s dresses, the flowers, even the coloring of the cake. You know what the bride wants – that’s part of the reason you were chosen! – and you can take care of the little details to give her some time to breathe. You can take care of hotel arrangements for out of town guests, make sure the limousines are on time, and even decide who will sit at what table during the reception. You can also be the one who returns those five blenders to the store for her (thanks to those five people who chose not to come to you with registry questions…tsk, tsk!)
Your role as the matron of honor is so important. Not only is she trusting you with the little details, she’s trusting you with the biggest moment of her life. You will stand up for your friend as she says those vows she has dreamed about, and you can be proud that you helped her get there. With a little work and know how you can be the best matron of honor a bride has ever had.
